01
START WITH WHAT CHANGED
You do not need every bill, policy, or answer before calling. Start with what happened, what hurts, and what has become harder. A useful first conversation should help you understand the immediate choices, not add another task to your list.
START WITH WHAT YOU KNOW →01
New symptoms, follow-up treatment, and PIP timing can all matter.
02
Repairs, a total loss, rentals, towing, and transportation affect daily life quickly.
03
Different carriers may ask different questions and protect different interests.
04
Missed income, appointments, pain, and limits at home deserve a clear record.
02
THE SHORT ANSWER
A well-supported claim connects how the crash happened to medically supported injuries, available insurance, and losses that can be documented. The work is not simply collecting paperwork. It is making the records tell one accurate story.
CRASH RECORD
The report, scene photographs, video, witness information, vehicle damage, and available vehicle data can help reconstruct the collision.
MEDICAL RECORD
Prompt, consistent care can connect symptoms, diagnoses, treatment, limitations, and future medical needs to the crash.
LIFE RECORD
Wage records, calendars, receipts, and simple notes can show missed work, lost independence, and the effect on ordinary responsibilities.
INSURANCE RECORD
PIP, bodily-injury liability, uninsured or underinsured motorist coverage, and property coverage may have different roles.
03
INSURANCE WITHOUT THE ALPHABET SOUP
More than one policy may matter. The first insurer to call is not necessarily the only source of coverage, and the policy language and facts control what is available.
COVERAGE
WHAT IT MAY ADDRESS
WHAT TO CHECK
PIP
WHAT IT MAY ADDRESS
Initial medical bills and part of qualifying lost income.
WHAT TO CHECK
Eligibility, treatment timing, medical findings, and available benefits.
AT-FAULT DRIVER
WHAT IT MAY ADDRESS
Injury losses that remain when negligence and coverage are established.
WHAT TO CHECK
Fault evidence, policy limits, other responsible parties, and documented harm.
UM / UIM
WHAT IT MAY ADDRESS
Losses when an at-fault driver has no liability coverage or too little.
WHAT TO CHECK
Whether coverage exists, policy terms, and required notice or consent.
VEHICLE COVERAGE
WHAT IT MAY ADDRESS
Repairs, total-loss value, towing, rentals, or related property issues.
WHAT TO CHECK
Which insurer handles the claim, the deductible, valuation, and inspection needs.
Coverage descriptions are general. The facts, policy language, exclusions, limits, and Florida law determine what applies.
04
LOCAL RECORDS MATTER
Pompano Beach contracts with the Broward Sheriff’s Office for police services. Depending on where the collision occurred and who responded, a report may come from BSO, the Florida Highway Patrol, or another agency. Businesses, roadway cameras, tow yards, repair facilities, medical providers, employers, and insurers may hold separate evidence.
01
Confirm who investigated and request the correct report. BSO provides an accident-report request path for its Pompano Beach district.
02
Atlantic Boulevard, Federal Highway, Sample Road, Copans Road, I-95, and the Turnpike may involve different cameras or record holders.
03
Photographs, estimates, tow records, repair data, event data, and physical damage can answer questions the report cannot.
04
Medical providers, employers, family members, and the injured person’s own records can document what changed after the impact.
VIDEO AND DIGITAL RECORDS MAY BE OVERWRITTEN. EARLY IDENTIFICATION CAN MATTER.
WHAT LEGAL HELP SHOULD ACTUALLY DO
Miller & Jacobs can organize the evidence and insurance questions while you focus on medical care and the parts of life only you can handle.
DISCUSS YOUR CRASH →01
Understand the collision, symptoms, coverage, and immediate concerns.
02
Determine which agencies, businesses, vehicles, and people may hold evidence.
03
Review the policies and possible sources of recovery without assuming there is only one.
04
Communicate accurately, respond to requests, and push back on unsupported positions.
05
Connect treatment, income, expenses, limitations, and future needs to the evidence.
06
Negotiate from the developed record and file suit when the facts and strategy support it.
05
DIFFERENT COLLISIONS CREATE DIFFERENT QUESTIONS
A rear impact, a lane-change crash, and a multi-vehicle highway collision may all be called car accidents. Each one can involve different visibility, timing, vehicle-data, witness, and insurance issues.
REAR IMPACTS
Following distance, sudden stops, chain reactions, and injury causation.
INTERSECTIONS
Signals, turns, right of way, sightlines, and independent video.
LANE CHANGES
Blind spots, merge timing, sideswipes, and vehicle positioning.
HIGHWAYS
Multiple vehicles, commercial traffic, debris, and high-speed impacts.
HIT-AND-RUN
Identification efforts, police records, PIP, and possible UM coverage.
RIDESHARE / WORK
Driver status, platform or employer relationships, and layered insurance.
06
FLORIDA RULES IN PLAIN LANGUAGE
Florida’s no-fault system can make the early insurance picture confusing. PIP and a claim against a negligent driver address different questions. An attorney can review both without assuming that one replaces the other.
14 DAYS
Florida PIP generally requires initial services and care within 14 days after the crash.
80% / 60%
PIP generally pays 80% of qualifying medical expenses and 60% of qualifying lost income, subject to the statute and policy.
$10,000
Benefits may reach $10,000 when an emergency medical condition is established; otherwise medical benefits may be limited to $2,500.
SEPARATE REVIEW
Florida law uses an injury threshold for pain, suffering, mental anguish, and inconvenience damages in covered motor-vehicle cases.
TIME AND FAULT STILL MATTER
Many Florida negligence actions now use a two-year filing period. Fault can reduce damages, and a person found more than 50% at fault generally cannot recover in the negligence action. Exceptions and the crash date can change the analysis.
SOURCES: FLORIDA STATUTES §§ 627.736, 627.737, 95.11, AND 768.81.
07
DOCUMENT THE REAL EFFECT
Bills matter, but they do not always show the full disruption. A careful record can connect the financial loss to the ways the injury affects movement, sleep, work, driving, caregiving, and ordinary independence. When a collision causes paralysis or spinal cord damage, the claim may need to account for long-term care, equipment, home access, transportation, and lost earning ability.
MEDICAL CARE
Emergency treatment, follow-up care, therapy, medication, and medically supported future needs.
INCOME
Missed shifts, reduced hours, used leave, lost opportunities, or reduced earning ability.
VEHICLE + COSTS
Repairs or total loss, towing, rentals, transportation, and other reasonable out-of-pocket expenses.
DAILY LIFE
Pain, sleep, mobility, household work, family responsibilities, recreation, and loss of independence.

QUESTIONS TO ANSWER BEFORE THE NEXT CALL
These are general answers, not legal advice for a particular collision. The right step can change with the policy, the evidence, the injuries, and who is asking the question.
01
You may have duties to cooperate with your own insurer. Another driver’s insurer does not represent you. Be accurate, do not guess, and understand who is asking and why before giving a recorded statement or broad medical authorization.
02
A report can be important, but it is not always the final word on civil fault. Photographs, video, witness accounts, vehicle damage, road design, and other records may support a different or more complete analysis.
03
Report the crash and preserve every identifying detail you have. PIP may address qualifying early benefits, and uninsured or underinsured motorist coverage may apply if it was purchased and the policy requirements are met.
04
Photograph the vehicle thoroughly and keep estimates, tow records, and total-loss communications. When disputed fault, a serious injury, a vehicle fire or burn injury, or a possible product issue exists, ask whether an inspection is needed before the vehicle is altered or released.
05
Seek appropriate medical care and give an accurate history. Some symptoms develop over time, but delay can make both treatment and proof harder. Florida PIP also has a 14-day initial-care requirement.
06
Yes. Many people do not know whether PIP, bodily-injury liability, UM/UIM, commercial, rideshare, or another policy may apply. Identifying the possible coverage is part of the early legal review.
07
The timeline depends on medical recovery, disputed responsibility, the number of parties, available coverage, insurer conduct, and whether litigation is needed. A quick resolution is not always a fair one.
